Individual campaign contributions represent a sizable fraction of campaign funding. However, there is little understanding on why individuals contribute. We test the role of social effects by means of a large-scale field experiment with nearly 200,000 contributors during the 2012 U.S. presidential election. We sent a series of letters with information about campaign contributions and study their effect on an individual’s actual contributions. Subtle differences in the mailings allow us to disentangle between two specific forms of social effects: signalling and social norms. Both types of social effects have an economically significant effect on contributions. We complement the experimental evidence with survey evidence and quasi-experimental evidence using observational data. We quantify the importance of social effects for the high degree of geographic polarization in contributions observed in the U.S. Last, we discuss the implications of the findings for the design of optimal disclosure policies.
