The Noble Gas Mass Spectrometer Lab
|

The mass spec lab is located in Hoffman 233. The lab was established from funds obtained from NSF (EAR 0236594) and Harvard. Since the lab is fully automated it is open for business 24 hours a day! The mass spectrometer laboratory renovations were completed at the end of October 2003. For more information about the mass spectrometer and its performance click here.

The detector array consists of three multipliers and one faraday. Multicollection is acheived by moving the beams around with a set of quad lenses. |

The double walled high-temperature furnace in action. The thermocouple is placed far from the hotspot and the thermocouple reading is corrected for with the help of a dual wavelength pyrometer. |

Part of the purification system with a RGA. The RGA, manufactured by Stanford Research is used for leak detection and for splitting the gas, if necessary, before letting it into the mass spectrometer. |

Close up of electronics rack with. The multigauge controller is polled frequently by the computer to check the status of the vacuum system. If a problem with the vacuum system is detected, the control software shuts down an automated run smoothly and sends group members an email notifying them of the problem. |
