The Lim/Stevens' Assault on Haleakala--Maui

In the summer of '98, Eric, Jon, Tim and me spent 3 days backpacking from the top of Haleakala down to the coast, and the hitchhiked to Hana to explore some waterfalls and make some good jumps. The trip was amazing, and included spelunking in a lava tube, freezing at 8,000 ft. but seeing some killer starts, swimming at a black sand beach after an 11 mile hike, hitchiking in the back of pickup with a guy who we're not sure was completely sober and potlucking with some brothers and sisters at an old historic church.

Here's Jon and Eric on Day 2 of the 3 day extravaganza. The second day of action included 11 miles on an800 foot descent to the ocean, stealing papaya, begging for cooking oil, enjoying a luau with fellow believers at an old school church and playing cards by lamp light while stray cats surrounded us.

Here is the first nights camp sight on the east end of the crater called Paliku. Although we were freezing, it was one of the most remote, peaceful campsights I've ever been to. A dinner of Ramen and sausage hit the spot after 10 miles in the crater.
Here's big ed with a big jump from a bridge near Hana. Truly, this spot was one of the best jumping places we've found in the islands.
Here's Jonny and I going tandem on a smaller, but more picturesque jump at the falls just above the prior bridge. This is also the place where we met the two sisters who would give us a ride back to the church we left our stuff at.
