Country Codes Readme File This compressed DOC file contains a comprehensive listing of international dialing prefixes. The list includes both country codes as well as supplementary intra-national codes (i.e. city codes, regional prefixes, etc.) Some may find this DOC file superior to similar databases for use on the Palm due to its small size and the wide use of DOC readers. Because most DOC readers have the ability to search a document, you can easily search the entire database for a country name, a city name, or for any part of a word. You can also search directly by the code number. Note that all country codes are immediately preceded by a "+" while the intra-national codes are not. Thus if you are searching for the country that corresponds to the dialing code "49" you should search for "+49" which will immediately return Germany. If you search for just "49" you will also return the dialing code for the French city of Toulon, 494, and the Chinese city of Puning, 7649, the Australian city of Newcastle, 49, among others. If you search for " 49" you will restrict the search to only intra-national codes that begin with 49. This ability to select for exact and partial matches of both the city names and dialing codes results in a much more powerful overall functionality than any other country code database available for the Palm Pilot. When you install this file into your Palm Pilot, it will not appear in the applications list, because it is not a stand-alone application. You must have a separate DOC reader in order to view the contents of this file. The DOC format is an industry standard format, and I highly recommend every Palm Pilot user to install a DOC reader in order to take advantage of the abundance of content available in this format. You can find many DOC readers at http://www.palmgear.com/ and http://www.memoware.com/ but three of my favourites are the shareware TealDoc (http://www.tealpoint.com/softdoc.htm), the freeware cSpotRun (http://www.32768.com/bill/palmos/cspotrun/), and the freeware ZDOC (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/7689/zdoc.html). You can also find them on PalmGear if you prefer. You can find a list of DOC readers, and a helpful FAQ at http://www.memoware.com/?screen=help Please report any mistakes and/or omissions in this list to lipoff@fas.harvard.edu so that I may update the list. I apologize for any inaccuracies in this list, but I cannot take responsibility for them. I will, however, endeavor to produce increasingly accurate updates. If you cannot find the location for which you are looking, be sure to search the entire document, rather than jumping to the letter directly. For example, "St. Maarten" will not be found under "S", but will be found under "Netherlands Antilles." Similarly, due to transliteration difficulties and/or multi-lingual regions there may be alterative spellings for certain locations. You may find that some of the internet sites below may be helpful if you are unable to find the information that you need from this document.
