In December 1999- January 2000, Nadia, Jenny, Tammie and I went
to China for our second "dance camp". This is a view of
Guangzhou from the dance dorms. |

Nadia at the Guangzhou Dance School. |
 |
Choi Lo Si and Zherng Lo Si, our dance teachers in the United States who unexpectedly took us under their wing for three weeks when we were miserable in the China (we were living in Guangzhou Dance School's old all-concrete dorms, which had permanently open windows in near-freezing temperatures and, of course, no heat source...it was like living in the cold room at lab!) We became their "adopted" granddaughters in China where they fed us (and never let us pay), gave us their own heater, and kept us busy at night to distract us from the cold. Amazing people... |
 |
Canton is not normally a cold place during the winter, but I think
it set some records this year! The heater was lent
to us by Choi and Zherng Lo Shi. Luckily, it warmed up quite a bit
later on. |

Tammie attempts to read in bed. |
 |
The bathroom at one of the restaurants CLS and ZLS took us to. |
 |
As a thank you for their kindness, we bought some colorful candies and snacks to make an impromptu gift for CLS and ZLS on Christmas. |
 |
Our Ta Ge teacher, who was kind enough to stay an extra night to help us with the dance when we had some trouble with it. We were suppose to learn a dance every two days with three hours of instruction per day, but we started learning Ta Ge almost the hour we arrived after a 16-hour flight! |
 |
With our Han teacher, who always made us laugh with her cuteness... |
 |
Us with our Tibetan teacher and Huali in one of the school's "real" dance studios (we were usually practicing in an older one). |
 |
Jenny and Huali, who was only fourteen but already a very good dancer. |
 |
Jenny trying to use up her film... |
 |
Choi Lo Shi and Zherng Lo Shi took us on a high-speed tour (five
places in one afternoon) of Canton. This is a statue of the Five Heavenly
Rams, which are suppose to represent peace in Guangzhou. |

Us in front of a ger, Mongolian hut still used in one of the few nomadic cultures left in the world. |

Me and Canton. |
 |
The "academic monastery" (where scholars of more ancient
times would go). It was a really beautiful place and I wish we could
have stayed longer, but we were in and out in half an hour!

Inside a temple... |

Eating in a Hong Kong McDonald's on Millenium Eve. Well, it was cheap... |
 |
Many of the buildings in Hong Kong were beautifully lit up for the New Year (although they can't be seen here). Christmas-size light bulbs were strung up and arranged on skyscrapers to make some amazing portraits that would cover the entire sides of the buildings. |
 |
Wandering around Hong Kong trying to find a place to watch the fireworks at the Millenium, we managed to break through a police line, hop a few fences, and almost lose each other multiple times. |
 |
Ironically, we ended up back at the hotel we started at for the countdown, which turned out to be a mess because they displayed two clocks - one in the hotel itself and one on the screening they were showing of another celebration. But the clocks were off by about 14 seconds, so most people ended up counting down twice! I guess it's something you don't really think about a year ahead of time, which is probably when they put up the clocks. |
 |
At Repulse Bay (it refers to a successful
"repulsion" of British forces off the coast). It's actually
a nice beach famous for its role in Hong Kong television series. There
were actually many people sunbathing, it being about eighty degrees
at the time -- very different from Canton! |

A fishing boat overlooking Hong Kong. |
 |
The Arc de Triumph at the "miniature world" park in Shenzhen.
They also had the Eiffel Tower, Greek ruins, Egyptian pyramids, and
dozens of other displays which we unfortunately didn't have time to
fully see. The attention to detail is amazing -- and some of them light
up at night, just as the originals do. |
 |
The fountain behind the Arc. |

In front of a peacock hedge at the miniature world. |
 |
Peering into the "windows" of a building which I don't
recall the name of. I just thought it had some beautiful architecture. |

Us at Stonehenge. |
