INTEX-B Hawaii

During April 2006 I forecasted atmospheric pollution for the NASA DC-8 flying laboratory in order to sample Asian pollution in the vicinity of Hawaii. We flew 3 sorties to the north of the islands and intercepted both fresh and aged pollution. On several flights we either resampled air we had previously measured or sampled air that would later reach the Pacific Northwest, where the NSF NCAR airplane would resample it. Aging experiments like this are difficult to coordinate, but provide valuable information about the chemical aging processeses of pollution.

The mission of the NASA INTEX-B project is to understand the long-range transport of air pollution and its photochemical aging. The logo shows the three coordinated research aircraft (left to right: NASA DC-8, NSF NCAR C-130, NASA J-31) and the Aura satellite. The four platforms coordinated their flights to resample pollution at different stages in its chemical evolution.
