2009 Harvard Graduate Student Field Trip: Iceland |
| Every year our department of Earth and Planetary Sciences graciously organizes a graduate student field trip to expose its students to the beauty of the Earth, to allow them to behold in real-life that which they typically study within the confines of their offices, to provide them with experience in the field and perhaps most importantly to integrate its new group of incoming students into the department in a natural, fun and educational way. |

In keeping with this tradition this year the department is offering a field trip to Iceland. Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge this country is volcanically and geologically active on a large scale, which defines the landscape. The interior mainly consists of a plateau characterized by sand fields, mountains and glaciers, while many big glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. As such it is an ideal location that both exemplifies and connects multiple Earth science disciplines such as: energy technology, geophysics, geochemistry, minerology, petrology, (structural) geology, tectonics, (glacial) geomorphology, paleontology and others. 08/04/2009 Pre-trip meeting on Wednesday August 12th at 5pm in the Faculty Lounge of Hoffman Labs. We will go over the trip and answer any questions you might have. For those of you who are bringing tents, please bring them then so we can (1) do a count and (2) re-distribute the equipment over the whole group. Be sure to label what is yours. 08/04/2009 Website is updated. See the "What To Bring" section. 07/20/2009 The website is up (obviously)! Have a look at the links below for more information about when/how we are travelling, what you will need to bring and the list of topics you can choose from to give a presentation during the field trip. After the trip we will also post a selection of pictures here. |
