Early periodical indexes : bibliographies and indexes of literature published in periodicals before 1900 / Robert Balay. Lanham, Md. : Scarecrow Press, 2000.
Lists close to 400 of the indexes, organized under broad subjects, with access by authors, titles, specific subjects, and dates. Annotations briefly describe the scope of each index and, when pertinent, the history. For general indexes, especially the ones whose scope seems too broad to be true (as with several online sources), Balay's discussions are lengthy and evaluative--a critical perspective that should make this book particularly useful on the reference shelf. Much of this literature is not accessible through any other indexes. (Choice, July 2001) All following entries noted as (Balay) will refer to this guide.

Revue française de science politiquePolybiblion - Revue Bibliographique Universelle. Paris: Aux bureaux de la revue, 1868-[1939]? [Irregular but mostly monthly issues.]
Index composed of two sections: the "partie littéraire" and the "partie technique." The "partie littérarie" contains short signed book reviews, organized by French books, foreign books in translation, and a small number of titles in foreign languages. It also includes a "chronique" with obituaries, decorations, literary prizes, and recent publications, as well as literary and cultural news from French regions and the world. At the end of each year, an alphabetical index provides access to authors reviewed and a table to the "chronique" section. The "partie technique" is more interesting but only runs until 1931. It provides a bibliography of recent publications in "théologie, jurisprudence, sciences et arts, belles-lettres, histoire," as well as many sub-divisions and includes a "sommaire des recueils périodiques.". This synopsis ("sommaire") is organized in alphabetical order by title and provides the table of contents to "périodiques français," "périodiques étrangers" (with a few titles from Germany, the US, GB, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and more), and "Journaux de Paris" (Action Française, La Croix, Démocratie nouvelle, Echo de Paris, l'Éclair, Le Figaro, La France illustrée, Le Gaulois, Journal des débats, Libre Parole, le Temps, Action Catholique de Québec). As the some or the last title indicate, this index has a definite Catholic slant.
