African American women of the Saramacca tribe greet Dr. Counter in the village of Asidonopo, in the deep rain forest interior of Suriname, South America. They are descendants of Africans brought to the Americas by the Dutch and Portuguese for slavery, but who escaped to establish African villages in the South American rain forest.
