Mapserver for German Historical GIS

Andreas Kunz
Institute of European History Mainz

Abstract: A server for digital historical maps on Germany and Europe is currently being constructed at the Institute of European History (Mainz, Germany) It contains downloadable maps (PS and PDF formats) on five thematic areas:

(1) Political development of Germany since 1812
(2) Economic integration of Germany in the 19th century
(3) Administrative development of Germany since 1815
(4) Lines of Transport
(5) Political development of Europe since 1812

Maps have been digitized using the map-construction program THEMAK2, which has also been employed in the new German national atlas currently being released. Aside of its service function, the Mapserver IEG-MAPS will function as a nucleus for a historical GIS on Germany and Europe in which two areas of inquiry will be emphasized in particular:

(1) A historical information system on German and Central European territories
(2) Central European transport networks

The data structure now being used in the mapping project will permit the migration of geographic data into a GIS structure, which will then be linked to relevant historical-statistical data permitting the (re)construction of maps at an interactive level.
