Tokyo is an ethnography of daily life, local social relationships, and
community institutions and identity in Miyamoto-chō
(a pseudonym), an ordinary,
middle-class community in
My principal
research in Miyamoto-chō for this book was
conducted in 1979-81, with follow-up research in 1984 and 1986. I have continued to keep in contact with the
community, where I lived with my family again in 1989-90, and have visited many
times by myself or with my family in the years since then.
