The Tokugawa
dynasty: The Shōgunate from 1603 – 1868
Genealogical table of Tokugawa
Shōgunate
The Great Families of the
Tokugawa clan
An illustrative note about dynastic politics, both
imperial and shōgunal: Tokugawa Kazuko (1607-1678), the daughter of
the second Shōgun Hidetada, was married to the
Emperor Go-Mizunoo in 1620. When the Go-Mizunoo
abdicated in 1629, their daughter (Tokugawa Ieyasu’s great granddaughter)
became the Empress Meishō (reigned 1629-43);
Tokugawa Kazuko’s influence on the Imperial court continued through the reigns
of the three succeeding Emperors, each of whom were among her step-sons.
