Some facts for prospective students
This laboratory is
a place where individuals gather with the common purpose of understanding
social cognition and emotion as it resides outside conscious awareness
and control. Our goal is to provide a basic understanding of the mechanics
of implicit social cognition and to explore the applications of the findings
to neuroscience, education, and the law. |

Investigations take
three different forms:
- Laboratory work:
Exploration of how people think and feel about the social world, with
a focus on beliefs (stereotypes) about and preferences (attitudes) for
social groups. It includes both experimental and correlational work,
using primarily behavioral, but also brain measurements.
- Research and education
via the web: Experimental and correlational research add new dimensions
to the work from the sheer volume and type of data available through
the Internet. Its many advantages include more diverse samples than
college students (in age, ethnicity, nationality) and the lack of coercion
in recruiting volunteers make it worth developing. The ease of providing
online education about how the mind works strengthens our motivation
to using and improving this technology.
- Education: Application
of scientific discoveries via lectures and the website. Typical student
groups include students, teachers, lawyers, judges, and other professionals
in medicine and business.
