Facsimiles & Recordings
pertaining to chapter 6: “Composed, Just Not Yet Written”—Music Never to Be
Heard

Note by the Author

My discussion in chapter 6 of chamber music works left unfinished by Mozart is aided by
facsimiles and recordings made available on this website.

The color reproductions of the autograph manuscripts on the following pages match the
black-and-white images (Figures 6.6-9) in the book referenced above. The color scans
allow for observing greater details such as the composer’s use of different inks. See, for
example, in the trio (Example 1, below) the later entries made in black ink.

Edited transcriptions of the fragments discussed are published in the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe
(NMA) and available online for study and downloading
(http://dme.mozarteum.at/DME/nma):

Trio in G major, K. Anh. 66 - NMA VIII/21, p. 170
Quartet in G minor, K. Anh. 74, - NMA VIII/20, p. 147
Quartet in E minor, K. Anh. 84, - NMA VIII/20, p. 136
Quintet in A minor, K. Anh. 79, - NMA VIII/19, p. 190

Complementing the manuscript and edited scores of the fragments are recorded examples
of the pieces not offered in concerts and on commercial CDs. The recordings were performed
by the Chiara String Quartet, Blodgett Quartet-in-Residence 2008-2012 at the Department
of Music, Harvard University: Rebecca Fischer (violin), Julie Hye-Yung Yoon (violin),
Jonah Sirota (viola), and Gregory Beaver (violoncello), with Clark Potter (viola II).
Recording engineer was Steven Gottlieb and the producer Christopher Marks. The
recordings faithfully replicate the fragmentary scores without any additions to Mozart’s
notated text.

I would like to thank the Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Biblioteca Donizetti in Bergamo,
and the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge for permission to use digital scans of the original
manuscripts from their collections. In addition, I am particularly grateful to the Chiara Quartet
for recording the fragments and to my Department, notably Nancy Shafman and Jean Moncrieff,
for having supported this special project. Finally, I wish to thank Matthew Henseler, PhD
candidate in the Harvard Music Department, for expertly preparing this website.
